Girls Dinner Club - Greek

We had one of the best Girls Dinner Club meals last Saturday. Our theme was Greek food.

I've always loved Greek food, but have never tried to make it before. We have several wonderful Greek restaurants here in Indy. My kitchen smelled just like one as I was preparing the food for our meal.

We started off the day with a HUGE Greek appetizer tray full of sliced cucumbers, olives, hummus, marinated tomatoes, feta and pita. D created this beautiful tray which was as good as it was pretty. She spoke to a friend of hers from Greece who said that everything must be cut BIG.  We also had a couple of bottles of Greek wine. Don't even ask me what they were - but they WERE very good.

Our hostess, M., prepared Pastitsio and Balsamic Chicken. Not quite sure what Patitsio was, I used my trusty google to find out.  Loosely translated it means "a mess" or hodgepodge. I will say that this "mess" was very good.  The ladies loved it.  You can find a recipe here if you'd like to try it.

I was a bit partial to the Balsamic chicken.

Balsamic Chicken

One of my sisters made marinated chicken that we ate like gyros. I made a Greek salad which consisted of cucumbers, tomatoes, olives, red onion, garlic and a Dijon vinaigrette. So refreshing.
Baklava

To finish off the evening, I made Baklava for dessert. I have always loved Baklava. There was a bakery that I used to go to here in Indy and buy it all the time. I ate so much of it, that I eventually grew a little tired of it. My love is back. It is extremely tedious to make - many layers of phyllo dough to cover with melted butter. Wait - I should have said many THIN layers. I don't like to bake because it just seems to take so long. However, I think I will try this again. It was a big hit with my husband and with the girls. Besides, I still have 3,000 sheets of phyllo left - LOL.

Our next Girls Supper Club is in a few months. Any suggests to a theme?
Have you tried to make Greek food? Thoughts???

Don't forget to enter my contest below. All entries must be in by midnight tonight, February 18th, 2011.
