Our kitchen - before we moved in |
We've been talking about granite for some time now. When we first built our home, we opted out of getting granite. We decided that it made more sense to put the money in structural things. You know -like adding additional feet to the home on one side, including Central Vac in our home and a few other things. I am so glad that we decided to do it this way.
We first started thinking about granite and then decided (based on things we read) that quartz was the way to go.
I had my kitchen all planned out in my head - beautiful white quartz counter tops highlighting our gorgeous kona cabinets. Not only did I plan this in my head, I even spent hours pinning different kitchens that looked like this. I had the perfect glass link chandelier in mind for the room. The only problem was that west elm stopped carrying it. I can't tell you how much time I spent trying to find it. It's just like the one in my office. Yep, still haven't found it, but it's not an issue anymore.
You see - we decided to go back to our original plan of granite. We visited one of the granite places in the city. The guy seemed a bit cocky at first. We asked about quartz and he was adamant that granite was the best option. "If your minds are made up, then fine get quartz, but we don't typically carry it.""I have lots of business." OKAY - I'm thinking I probably would have walked out then and there. BUT -
My husband, being the guy that he is, asked him to tell us why granite was better. "Sell us on it."
So, he told us his reasons. We listened and asked questions - well, hubby did.
I was trying to figure out how I was going to go from the kitchen in my mind to a new one.
We already had plans to visit another granite company that same day. We decided we would ask him the same question.
So, we get there and had a few minutes to wait while they assisted another couple. This gave us time to look around. I found some quartz there - my white quartz. But it wasn't really white - white. Each piece had a bit of speckles in them - some darker than others.
I also saw some of their granite pieces. I can not believe how quickly my mind shifted from my original dream kitchen to this new one. Actually, I can. See we were toying with the idea of granite in our first home. I new exactly the kind I wanted. Lighter with not a lot of movement (the veining).
He actually solidified the points made by the first guy. Granite it is.
We had each company give us an estimate. The first company came in under what the second one did. They also had time slots sooner than the second company.
I'll take you along on our kitchen remodel journey over a few posts. We are almost finished - just waiting for the back splash guy and the install of the pendants.
Have you done a remodel? Would you do it again?
Here is a picture of our new granite pieces:
Can't wait to see the pendants!
